Why does this flashlight app want your contacts?

Give each app the access its useful features require.

Fictional example: an everyday situation

A weather app asks Mei for precise location all the time. She chooses approximate location while using it, then checks that the weather feature still works.

The problem

Camera, microphone, contacts and location are separate permissions. A request may support a specific feature without needing access all the time.

Technical access and commercial data use are different questions. Limiting permissions reduces what an app can obtain but does not necessarily delete information already collected.

What to do now

Step 1: Open permission settings

Search device settings for “Privacy” or “Permissions”. Review apps with access to location, microphone, camera and contacts. Paths vary by system.

Step 2: Match access to the feature

Choose “While using”, approximate location or selected photos where appropriate. A navigation app may need more access than an occasional photo editor.

Step 3: Remove unnecessary access

Revoke an unneeded permission and check functionality. If a useful feature stops working, understand the requested access before restoring it. On a managed device, consult the administrator.

Step 4: Remove abandoned apps

Before uninstalling, check files and data you need to keep. Uninstalling does not necessarily close the account or cancel a subscription. Use the service’s settings for those actions.

Useful indicators

Systems may show when the camera or microphone is in use and provide access history. Consult device help to understand what these indicators cover. They do not describe all data collection.

Choosing apps

Review the publisher, maintenance and privacy policy. Download from official sources and question access unrelated to the expected service.
